Police work is often defined by long nights, split-second decisions, and the burden of carrying other people’s pain. But for many officers, the deeper story lies in the faith that sustains them through those moments.

That reality came into sharp focus at the National Law Enforcement Museum during National Police Week, where the “Sheepdog and Shepherd” podcast gathered officers and advocates to share how Christ has shaped their calling to serve.

Chris Potter described the moment he realized suffering was not God’s doing but a place where God’s presence could still be found.

“I started to realize that God didn’t do this to me. That these things happen to people, that he was there the whole time. He hated this for me. And that kind of changed everything,” he said.

Baptism with his wife before marriage, he explained, set a foundation for navigating future struggles. “It changed my life. And it has changed my life in so many ways in the struggles I faced since that time.”

Special co-host Von Kliem, CCCO of Force Science, joined host Kyle Reyes to bring his perspective to the table. As director of consulting and communications, Kliem has worked on many high-profile police shooting cases.

“We’re litigation consultants, so we’re out there ensuring that the jurors and the judges remember there’s a human behind that badge,” he said. Kliem noted that faith is not only personal but also essential in how officers are seen and treated in a justice system that can feel stacked against them.

The discussion turned to the role of Christ in both personal and professional life. Officers shared how scripture and prayer sustained them through late-night calls, moments of danger, and the weight of responsibility. “We’re focusing on our relationships with Christ and how that has affected our careers, our personal lives, our relationships, particularly in law enforcement,” Kliem emphasized.

The episode featured a discussion of Sherry’s experience of losing her first husband in the line of duty and how Chris and Christ ultimately saved her. With remarkable candor and calm strength, Sherry described the instant she learned the news, the storm of emotions that followed, and the heavy responsibility of helping her children understand the loss.

Chris shared his perspective on walking beside someone who has endured such deep sorrow, explaining how their marriage has been marked by grief, resilience, and love. Together, their story speaks not only of tragedy but also of healing, showing the lasting mark of sacrifice on a family and the courage required to keep moving forward.

The backdrop of Police Week, with ceremonies honoring fallen officers, added weight to these reflections. As attendees honored sacrifice, they also pointed to resilience. Their message was clear: strength comes not from politics or recognition, but from a higher calling.

The conversation closed with gratitude and resolve. Behind every badge, they agreed, is a story of faith, perseverance, and purpose.
