NEW ORLEANS, LA - Two shootings along the route of an annual parade through the St. Roch area of New Orleans left two people dead and ten wounded Sunday. The attacks reportedly used “different approaches,” and police cannot confirm if they were related, according to Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. The shootings took place within 45 minutes of each other starting at 3:38 p.m. Eastern Time according to NoLa.com, and were less than a mile apart along Almonaster Avenue.
The outlet reported that a group of as yet unidentified suspects in a vehicle opened fire into a crowd of parade-goers of the annual Nine Times Social Aid and Pleasure Club second line parade. In the first incident nine people were wounded, police told reporters, all nine survived with varying injuries. According to ballistics investigators, two weapons were likely fired into the crowd.
NoLa reported that even as police were briefing the media on the first shooting the shots of the second could be heard. The scene was complex with thousands of revelers enjoying the festivities. The New Orleans Police Department deployed the entire force of the Fifth District according to District Captain Jennifer Dupree with three intelligence officers embedded with the crowd.
WDSU identified the victims killed as Rasean Carter, 21, and Malachi Jackson, 19.
Kirkpatrick told a press conference later that there were 100 NOPD officers on the scene and that one firearm had been recovered so far and confirmed the ballistics showed two weapons had been fired.
Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement released Monday, "I’m saddened to learn about this senseless mass shooting in New Orleans this afternoon. I’m praying for the victims & their families. This kind of lawlessness will NOT be tolerated. I’m hopeful the perpetrators are caught soon & prosecuted to the full extent of the law. You can call Crimestoppers anonymously if you have any information on this shooting at (504) 822-1111."
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson also responded to the shooting in a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and the injuries that occurred this weekend. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to those who are recovering from injuries. Please know that you are not alone during this difficult time.
