Six suspects arrested after torturing man in weeklong kidnapping

MAUMEE, OH - Six people involved in a polygamist relationship have been arrested after a man was allegedly kidnapped and tortured using a metal bat for an entire week in a hotel room.

According to Fox News, a grand jury has indicted 28-year-old Martina Esqueda Jones, 28-year-old Michael Esqueda, 49-year-old Aaron Bradshaw, 23-year-old Austin Bradshaw, 27-year-old Chance Johnson, and 26-year-old David Cessna, on felony kidnapping to terrorize or inflict serious physical harm charges.

Prosecutors are calling the incident "extremely disturbing" after allegedly that the six defendants began holding a man against his will on March 14th and proceeded to torture him at a Red Roof Inn for an entire week. Court documents state the group restrained the man while beating him with a metal bat and depriving him of food and water.

In an interview with 13 Action News, Maumee Police Chief Josh Sprow said, "He was being essentially tortured, assaulted, over the timeframe of a week. His injuries were results of being struck with a baseball bat, struck with fists, elbows, stomping on him when he was on the ground, which over time resulted in multiple fractured bones."

The victim only slept for about 10 hours during the seven-day stretch. Sprow said that Martina Jones was the one calling the shots in the kidnapping and assault, ordering the group to beat the victim.

Investigators determined that she had a romantic relationship with the other suspects, and had multiple children by them. The suspects would let the victim out on occasion, which is what eventually led the police to catch the six people involved. Sprow said, "Friday he was allowed to leave the room to go to Speedway. When he was there he made contact with an individual, who got in contact with the victim's mother. When she was contacted by this literal stranger, she knew something was up."

The victim's mother raced to the Red Roof Inn to help her son. Maumee police were called out to the hotel for a report of a disturbance. Police obtained warrants and began watching the hotel, later arresting six defendants.

Investigators determined that the victim was transported between two locations during his time being held captive; the hotel in Maumee along with a home in Toledo where two of the defendants live. Sprow said, "It's clearly a strange situation when you have multiple adult men involved in a relationship with a female and then this whole felonious assault, kidnapping taking place. Definitely not something that is normally happening in our city."

Officers found the victim in time to get him medical treatment and he is expected to survive. Assistant City Prosecutor Andy Lastra said, "The totality of those injuries has not been determined." He then described the case as "extremely disturbing." The group was allegedly planning to flee the area, but officers arrested them before they got the chance to take off.

Three of the defendants — Martina Jones, Michael Esqueda, and David Cessna are facing additional charges in Maumee Municipal Court. Jones has been charged with second-degree felonious assault and domestic violence to a household member. Esqueda has been charged with second-degree felonious assault. Cessna has been charged with second-degree domestic violence. The judge has set their bond at $200,000 each.
