EL PASO, TX - A Mexican national and two American co-conspirators are facing arraignment in El Paso after they allegedly transported 24 illegal immigrants in a vehicle retrofitted or “cloned” to resemble a US Border Patrol K-9 vehicle.
The indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona revealed the allegations that Uriel Perez, Jovani Sanchez, and Keven Valdez Ramirez were engaged in a conspiracy to smuggle illegal immigrants into the U.S. from a break in the border wall at Andrade, CA to a home in Yuma, AZ.
According to Border Report, a white Ford F-150 was customized, down to the license plate number, to match a USBP K-9 unit in the area that was used to pick up illegal immigrants at the wall on January 8th and may have been used for another smuggling run in early December.
The complaint affidavit included a statement from a federal agent saying, “Using vehicles that appear to be Border Patrol (units) or construction crew (vehicles) are tactics commonly used by members of human smuggling organizations to conceal illegal activity when operating near the border wall.”
Court documents cited by Border Report stated that the Border Patrol Anti-Smuggling Unit pursued the counterfeit K-9 patrol vehicle to a Yuma home where a Ford Explorer driven by Jovani Sanchez who had arrived to pick up Uriel Perez, the alleged smuggling vehicle driver. When the Explorer came to a stop at another nearby residence, agents made the arrests, and a scene described as chaotic unfolded.
ICE agents observed multiple subjects attempting to flee into neighboring properties as the agents approached and detained them. Fifteen more people were located on the patio of the home and screaming could be heard emanating from the home. A woman, with a young child nearby, was calling out for help telling agents she was injured and couldn’t get up.
Border Patrol agents called for medical transportation and swept the home where the found more illegal immigrants. All told, the ICE action led to the capture of 24 illegal immigrants on the property.
The outlet reported that one of the men apprehended, Keven Valdez Ramirez of Mexico, told agents that he was in the U.S. on a visitor visa but was arranging to pay $13,000 to the smugglers to bypass immigration checkpoints on the highway to get to Los Angeles.
Allegedly the smugglers offered to deduct $800-$1,000 off of the fee if he would manage the illegal immigrants in the home. Border Report noted that court documents state he would take photos of all the illegal immigrants in the home and send them on to the smugglers.
All three men were arraigned Wednesday and Perez has a hearing on February 19th.
