FLORENCE, SC - A South Carolina high school employee was arrested after authorities said he used a "poop" odor spray in the school, causing some students to get sick and causing thousands of dollars in damage.
Late last week, Alexander Lewis, a 32-year-old teaching assistant at a Florence high school, was arrested by deputies. Between August 25 and September 19, Lewis allegedly used "an internet acquired spray designed to imitate fecal odor at the school," according to the Florence County Sheriff's Office (FCSO).
Authorities alleged that Lewis used the spray several times, causing disruptions at school and some students to need medical attention for breathing problems. The sheriff's office said that the district spent more than $55,000 for inspections and to repair the high school's air conditioning system.
In August, the district assured parents via email that inspections of the school's gas lines, propane systems, and air quality revealed no dangers, according to Local12.
However, officials now believe the odor was intentionally caused by Lewis. Officals said additional charges against Lewis are possible and that the investigation is ongoing. Lewis was booked into the Florence County Detention Center on disturbing schools and malicious injury to property charges.
A judge set his total bond at just over $9,000. The malicious injury to personal property charge would be addressed in general sessions court on November 19, with a bond set at $8,000. The charge of interfering with schools would be heard in Florence Magistrates Court on October 15, with a bond of $1,090.
In 2023, two teenage boys at a Texas high school were criminally charged after a fart spray prank led to evacuations, canceled classes, and sent students to the hospital for nausea and headaches.
The boys, 18 and 17 at the time, were charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, according to NBC News.
