Let’s call it a “Tale of Two Moms Groups.” One, Moms Demand Action, is a gun control group funded by billionaire Michael Bloomberg. That group is held up as the epitome of moms getting involved in a cause to “save kids' lives.”
The second group, Moms for Liberty, was formed when parents, primarily mothers, discovered what their children were really being taught in school. The two founders, Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, “witnessed how short-sighted and destructive policies directly hurt children and families.”
Unlike Moms Demand Action, Moms for Liberty has been designated a terrorist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center and saw the National School Boards Association, in collaboration with the Biden White House, draft a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and refer to them as “domestic terrorists.”
Being designated a terrorist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center is a badge of honor for right-leaning, conservative, and Christian groups.
As a result of that designation, Moms for Liberty, via the Heritage Foundation, is suing several federal agencies, seeking Freedom of Information Act information on the FBI, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Education.
The two founders, Tiffany and Tina, are just moms who want what is best for their children and all children. Tiffany is a married mother of four who served four years on the Indian River County, FL, school board from 2016 to 2020.
Tiffany’s profile says she “believes that kids in public school deserve innovation and parents have the right to know the union interference and government bureaucracy that is keeping that innovation from happening in their children’s district.”
Tina was elected to the Brevard County, FL, school board in 2016. Married and the mother of five, Tina became the Florida Coalition of School Board Members president in 2018. She currently serves on several nonprofit boards in her community aimed at helping children. Tina is “passionate about America and is dedicated to protecting liberty and freedom for the future of all children.”
Wow, they sure sound like a couple of “domestic terrorists,” clearly much more radical than members of Antifa or Black Lives Matter. Or the Southern Poverty Law Center, for that matter. Clearly, identifying these two moms and the members of the group they founded as “terrorists” is absurd.
That hasn’t stopped leftists from putting a target on the group’s back. Last summer, Moms For Liberty was hosting a four-day summit in Philadelphia, which saw both leading Republican presidential candidates, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and former President Donald Trump making appearances.
The event was held at the Museum of the American Revolution, and staffers at the museum and “historians” denounced the event being held there. The irony is rich.
Those who spoke out against the event claim the group has “encouraged the harassment of teachers and librarians” and engaged in “hateful rhetoric” about the alphabet community.
A group called “The Committee on LGBT History” was one of the first groups to speak out against the moms. That and other groups said the museum was “lending legitimacy” to the group.
Another badge of honor for Moms for Liberty is that they have been criticized by Media Matters, which is still able to maintain its nonprofit status despite being shills for the Democrat Party. Media Matters accuses Moms for Liberty of engaging in “book banning,” which isn’t bad when you’re trying to keep pornographic material and racist books out of grade school libraries.
In response to being designated an extremist group by the SPLC, the founders—Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich—released the following statement:
Law Enforcement Today contacted the Hartford County chapter of Moms for Liberty and spoke to its president, Manju Gerber. She told us that the designation by SPLC was “offensive and intolerant,” asking, “Since when did parental rights become a dirty word? Standing up for your OWN child is now deemed hate?"
Ms. Gerber noted that parents are legally responsible for educating their children and other parental responsibilities, such as their health and ensuring they are fed, clothed, and sheltered.
She also disputed the claim that Moms for Liberty is trying to ban or burn books, calling it a false narrative designed to hide the real issue, whether the content is developmentally appropriate.
“All we are asking is for books to be placed in the library according to age appropriateness,” she said. “After all, would you give a 6-year-old child an assignment to read Homer, Shakespeare, or even JD Salinger? Of course not, because they are not age-appropriate books for 6-year-olds. They are not ready to handle that type of material.”
She then noted those who have actually been banning books, citing titles that have been banned by the political left, including Dr. Seuss books and books such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn, and books about Sir Isaac Newton. She even noted that several years ago, SPLC called respected surgeon Dr. Ben Carson an extremist. She said they were forced to apologize to Dr. Carson after public backlash.
She also disputed the notion Moms for Liberty is homophobic or that they hate transgender persons, noting some members are in the LGBTQ community. She said where the group has an issue is their focus on children instead of adults above the age of consent.
“That’s the very definition of liberty,” Ms. Gerber said. “We don’t care what goes on between consenting adults behind closed doors. However, to recommend puberty blockers to young children or have them undergo sex mutilation surgery (e.g., mastectomy, hysterectomy, surgically removing male genitals) is horrifying. Children as young as ten years old simply cannot understand the lifetime ramifications of these medical procedures.”
She then contrasted sexual reassignment procedures to other matters where someone must be eighteen to consent, such as drinking alcohol and enlisting in the military.
“How can they be old enough to comprehend the irreversible impact of puberty-blocking drugs and/or surgery?” she asked.
She outlined what Moms for Liberty-Hartford County stands for.
“We stand for curriculum transparency, for supporting girls’ sports, for giving parents the choice to opt-out of a class or course without repercussions,” she said. “This could be done through building a bridge between the parent/guardian and the school district and by including your child’s teacher.”
She admitted that parents cannot expect to get 100% of what they want, noting different parents may wish to or expect other things. She said the same should apply to the school districts. She said the group believes that “open lines of communication would clear up trust issues on both sides and both sides may reach am amicable, albeit not perfect end result. Respect goes both ways, and so does trust. So let’s be open about the top requirements we need as parents or guardians.”
She also reminded political leaders that parents not only serve in that role but are also taxpayers who expect their representatives to “hear our voice and listen to what we say. After all, they represent us and need our votes.”
Ms. Gerber said the group tries to be non-partisan, but only one side takes the time to listen to parents' concerns. Not only do they listen, they act, she said.
“Shouldn’t this be heard on both sides? After all, aren’t members of each political party parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, godparents, etc.?” she queried. “What would be the reaction if a person came into the classroom and discussed Christian values to kids or talked about pro-life issues to children without being notified?”
She said it is up to parents, not the government, to teach children ethics and morals. She said schools “play an essential role in educating children and ensuring they get the best tools required to move up the ladder in school and through college.”
Gerber said parents need to get involved, regardless of religion, color, or politics, and have their voices heard.
“…because these children…our children…are the future for our nation. Just as our beloved country needs them, they need this country, too,” Ms. Gerber said. “They are its future innovators, scientists, artists, and leaders. If their education fails, this nation fails.”
“Make your voice heard in the school board elections, in your local elections, in your state elections, and your national elections. Stand up for your children. They are watching us more than ever because they need us NOW.”

“Name-calling parents, who want to be a part of their child’s education as ‘hate groups’ or ‘bigoted’ just further exposes what this battle is all about: Who fundamentally gets to decide what is taught to our kids in school—parents or government employees? We believe that parental rights do not stop at the classroom door, and no amount of hate from groups like this is going to stop that.”
