BAY SHORE, NY - On Saturday, February 17, a 33-year-old man involved in a domestic dispute was fatally shot by responding police after he reportedly tried to stab one of the officers to death.
According to CBS News, streets around Udall Road were closed off as the neighborhood became a crime scene after what appears to be a domestic violence dispute turned deadly. News12 reported that Suffolk County Police Commissioner Robert Waring stated that three officers responded to a 911 call at 1138 Udall Road at 9:10 a.m. The woman who called had stated that her husband was "acting violent."
Waring said that when one officer opened a screen door to the home, 33-year-old Taiquell Woodson charged at him with a knife. The officer fell backwards into the snow as Woodson stabbed him repeatedly. Waring said that the man was "clearly attempting to kill" the officer and that the bulletproof vest saved his life.
Waring said in a statement, "One officer deployed his taser, which was unsuccessful. A third officer fired his service weapon, striking Woodson and stopping the attack." Life saving measures were initiated on Woodson at the scene, however, he later died at South Shore University Hospital.
According to authorities, Woodson's wife and their one-year-old child were not injured. A trauma center doctor said that the wounded officer had knife wounds to his hands, both forearms and his face. He said that the officers who applied a tourniquet to his wounds helped stop the bleeding at the scene. The doctor said that he is hopeful the officer makes a full recovery, but that there might be some nerve damage to his dominant hand.
The trauma doctor, who appeared to be emotional about the incident, added, "It makes me sick to my stomach." He said that this was the latest in a string of violent attacks on Suffolk police officers.
Suffolk Police Benevolent Association (PBA) President Lou Civello said that Woodson is a "violent career felon" who was "intent on killing a police officer today." Waring did not elaborate on Woodson's rap sheet and only mentioned that he was arrested for a robbery in Riverhead last year.
Waring said in a statement, "Law enforcement is a dangerous profession and our officers put their lives on the line every day. This incident occurred in about five seconds. I want to be clear: This was a justified shooting. Without the decisive actions of these officers, one of our officers would have been killed today."
The incident was captured on body camera footage; authorities have yet to announce when that video will be released to the public. The identity of the officer has not been made public, but Waring said that the officer has been with the Suffolk County Police for a year and a half. The shooting will be investigated by the state attorney general's office.
