EUCLID, OH - The search for Deshawn A. Vaughn, the suspect wanted for fatally shooting Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin, came to a conclusion in Shaker Heights on Sunday evening after Vaughn was found deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.
Officer Derbin, 23, was tragically ambushed while responding to a disturbance call in Euclid on Saturday night, allegedly by Vaughn. The incident prompted a swift and determined pursuit of the suspect, leading to an extensive manhunt that gripped the local community.
Law enforcement officials, including U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot, confirmed Vaughn's demise during an evening news conference. Vaughn was discovered heavily armed inside an apartment, marking the end of the intense standoff. "The manhunt is now over," Elliot said.
Vaughn had reportedly made social media posts mocking the manhunt and the death of Officer Derbin.
Chief Scott Meyer of the Euclid Police Department expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Officer Derbin, describing him as a dedicated officer who served with honor and professionalism.
Derbin's military background and commitment to public service were highlighted as exemplary qualities by his colleagues.
"He was a kind of happy-go-lucky kind of a guy," Meyer said. "He just loved public service and loved being here. He was that rare find, and I’m devastated, and his family is obviously devastated."
Derbin's father is also a police officer for the city of Euclid, according to the chief.
