Suspect who shot sheriff's deputy fatally shot by police in Kentucky

LOUSIVILLE, KY - A manhunt for a suspect who shot a sheriff's deputy in Indiana ended with him being fatally shot during a shootout with police in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to Local12, 33-year-old Austin Schepers was at large after allegedly shooting a sheriff's deputy in southern Indiana. WLKY reported that Indiana State Police said the incident happened in Orange County, near West Baden, in the area of US 150 and SR 56. Just after midnight on January 3rd, someone reported a strange car in the area.

Deputy Zac Andry approached the car that appeared to have been broken down and as he did, the suspect, identified as Schepers, fired at the deputy. Andry was taken to UofL Hospital to be treated for his injuries. As of this writing, the last update on Andry from the Indiana State Police (ISP) is that he underwent surgery for multiple injuries and is in critical condition.

After the shooting, ISP issued a Blue Alert and said that Schepers was believed to have been armed and dangerous, and he should not be approached. ISP also said that he has had many run ins with law enforcement and is "well known" in the area. When he shot at the deputy, he was with a woman, believed to be his girlfriend. She was found in a wooded area and was questioned by police.

Following the shooting of the deputy, Schepers was last seen driving a silver 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix with Indiana license plate CRT-921. Just before 8:00 a.m. on January 3rd, that vehicle was found in Orangeville, but Schepers was not with it. Police had previously executed a search warrant on a residence in the 1800 block of East Market Street in New Albany, Indiana. However, law enforcement did not locate Schepers during that search.

After receiving information about Schepers whereabouts, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and the U.S. Marshall task force responded to a property on Wheeler Avenue, in Lousiville, Kentucky. Authorities located Schepers in the backyard of the home; he immediately opened fire on the officers. The officers returned fire and Schepers was struck several times. Schepers died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured during the shootout.

LMPD Chief of Police Paul Humphrey said that the department's public integrity unit is investigating the shooting. Bodycam video of the incident is expected to be released in approximately 10 days. Chief Humphrey said that the department's prayers are with Andry. In an update, officials said that the hospital's surgical team is "pleased with the outcome," adding that the officer has started lowering his medication dosage.

ISP has set up a fund to support Andry and his family. The account was established at Spring Valley Bank and Trust, which is located at 8482 State Road 56. Those who wish to donate to the account can stop into the Spring Valley Bank and Trust location nearest them or call 1-800-843-4947. Donation options are also available at this link
