FRISCO, TX - Authorities in the state of Texas have announced that a high school student has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of another student at a track meet.
According to ABC News, the horrific incident happened on Wednesday, April 2nd, at a Frisco Independent School District stadium during a track and field championship involving several schools in the district. In a press release, the Frisco Police Department (FPD) said, "An altercation between two students resulted in one stabbing the other."
Authorities said that despite lifesaving measures by police and fire personnel, the 17-year-old victim died. The victim has been identified as Austin Metcalf, an 11th grader at Frisco Memorial High School. Metcalf was a student-athlete who played football and ran track.
The suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony. He is a student at Frisco Centennial High School and he has been charged with first-degree murder. As of this writing, no bond has been set yet.
FPD said it is collaborating with the Frisco Independent School District (ISD) and "will continue to provide any support they need during this incredibly difficult time." The department said, "The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family, students, and staff who are experiencing unimaginable pain."
In an email to students and parents, Frisco ISD wrote, "Frisco ISD shares in the grief of everyone impacted by this heartbreaking loss, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the victim's family, students, staff, and our community during this difficult time." The district said that Memorial High School will acknowledge Metcalf's death during school on Thursday, April 3rd and offer support throughout the day.
According to CBS News, just two days before the stabbing, Metcalf posted on X, "Faith and God got me and my work will pay off." Friend and football teammate, Gavin Stites said, "I'd probably call him a brother," adding that he has known Metcalf since they played together on the same soccer team as kids.
He said, "I've known him since I was five years old. If I need anything from him, he was there." Stites said that Metcalf was someone he could always trust to have his back. He said Metcalf was truly the heart of their football team and he even played alongside his twin brother, Hunter.
Stites said, "He was kind of, the light that we all looked for. You know, even our warmup, he'd get the chat going and get us fired. He was the, he is actually that, he is the spirit." Metcalf's father Jeff said that his son died in his twin brother's arms. He wrote on social media, "This tragedy has shaken me, family, friends to the core. I trust God will bring us through the tough times ahead."
Stites said, "I'm happy he's in heaven. That's what I'd tell him and that Hunter and I will look after his mom for him." The principal of Metcalf's school told parents, "As a parent, your guidance and support will be important in helping your child process grief. Talking about this together, face-to-face, will give you a chance to discuss how your family understands and cops with loss."
