HARRIS COUNTY, TX- Authorities with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said that one of their troopers was involved in a shooting when a 17-year-old boy ran from traffic stop after reaching towards his waistband.
According to ABC13, the teen was on his way to the dentist with his mom driving and was pulled over in the Atascocita area on Friday, January 10th. The car was pulled over on Will Clayton Parkway westbound at Village Tower Drive around 11:00 a.m. DPS spokesperson Lt. Craig Cummings said authorities are still investigating what lead the trooper to pulling them over in the first place.
Family members of the teen said they believe the trooper pulled over the mother and son because the tint on her car windows was too dark. Lt. Cummings would not specify whether the teen actually pulled the gun out as he reached for his waistband, but did say that investigators found a gun on scene after the teen was shot.
Cummings said, "I don't want to get to a point of making assumptions. We can say he reached toward his waist, and a weapon was found where the suspect fell to the ground." Cummings also said that during the traffic stop, there were indicators of drug activity in the car, which prompted the trooper to have the mother and son get out of the car and conduct a pat-down of them both.
When the trooper felt a weapon, the teen began running. Cummings said the teen rain for about 200 yards before he allegedly turned around and moved his hand toward his waistband. That is when the trooper shot the teen, striking him in the upper part of his body. According to reports, the trooper and others performed live-saving measures until the paramedics arrived. DPS said the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras.
The Texas Rangers are investigating if the teen did, in fact, pull out a gun or point it at the trooper. Only one trooper was involved in the incident, which is customary for the agency, as noted by Cummings. The trooper has been placed on administrative leave, which is per protocol.
ABC13 also reported that after the mom and teen were pulled over, Andrea Jasmine, the teen's aunt, said she got a call from him. She said, "He called me and said, 'Can you come and get me?' I heard one of the police say, 'What are you doing?'" Jasmine said the next thing she knew, she heard shots over the phone.
She said, "I don't know nothing about no gun. And if he did have a gun, from what I was told, he was running away from the police, and the area." Jasime said her nephew will undergo surgery at Texas Children's Hospital. She said her sister, the teen's mom, was released Friday morning.
In a separate incident, police with Fort Worth are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened on Thursday, January 9th. According to FOX4, police said they were called to the 5600 block of Seafield Lane around 6:20 p.m. to calls about domestic disturbance and gunshots being fired in the area. Upon arriving on scene, officers fired at a male suspect who was the transported to a nearby hospital. No officers were injured.
As of this writing, police have not released additional details about the incident or the shooting. The suspect's name or identity has not yet been released.

Sorry but 1) He should not have run 2) Reaching for anything when a trooper tells you to stop is absolutely insane! 3) What is his race? 4) The trooper was in the right!
