GEORGETOWN, TX - A fire has turned into a crime scene after two men with trauma were found dead, and police suspect foul play. Officers with the Georgetown Police Department (GPD) are actively working a crime scene at a residence in the 300 block of Pipe Creek Lane.
The scene is located in Sun City, a retirement community. It is unclear whether the victims were residents, CBS Austin reported. Police have ruled the two deaths a double homicide, saying that both men were killed before the house was intentionally set on fire.
Police have a person of interest in custody, but murder charges have not yet been filed, according to CBS Austin. The victims have been identified as 76-year-old James Yost and 33-year-old Kenneth Clanton. Police said that both had injuries consistent with a "cutting instrument."
Susan and Grant Jones stepped outside Monday night, December 1, when they heard screaming coming from their neighbor's home. What they found next door was horrifying. "I just couldn't believe it. There was a lot of blood. A lot of blood," they said.
The couple and their daughter rushed over as smoke poured from the home. Outside the house, their neighbor of 14 years, Clanton, was on the ground, already unresponsive. Susan attempted CPR. "He gave one little puff, and that was it," she said. Responding to the house fire, first responders found a second body inside the home. That victim was identified as Yost.
Saturday afternoon, police arrested 28-year-old Justice Washington, who also lived in the home and was in an "intimate relationship" with Clanton. Washington was taken into custody on unrelated charges, but officers said he was found driving Yost's car.
"The Georgetown Police Department is deeply saddened by the events that occurred last night in the Sun City subdivision. We recognize the concern this incident has caused in the community and extend our condolences to those affected," GPD said in a statement, KXAN reported. The investigation remains active.
