A federal prosecutor told a Maryland judge Thursday that once Kilmar Abrego Garcia finishes his jail sentence in Tennessee, the Trump administration intends to deport him to a country other than his native El Salvador.
Justice Department lawyer Jonathan Guynn stated, according to WRIC, that the removal process would involve sending Abrego Garcia to a “third country.” However, the prosecutor also mentioned that there are “no imminent plans” to deport him and that the U.S. government will adhere to all court orders.
Guynn acknowledged the government’s intentions during a quickly arranged conference call with Abrego Garcia’s attorneys and U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. Abrego Garcia’s lawyers had submitted an emergency petition requesting that Xinis order the government to transfer Abrego Garcia to Maryland upon his release in Tennessee, a move designed to prevent his deportation before trial.
“We have concerns that the government may try to remove Mr. Abrego Garcia quickly over the weekend, something like that,” one of his attorneys, Jonathan Cooper, expressed to Xinis during the call.
Prosecutor says ‘there’s no timeline’
However, Xinis explained that she could not act as swiftly as Abrego Garcia’s attorneys wished. She indicated she needed to review the Trump administration’s pending motions to dismiss the case before deciding on the emergency petition. The judge set a hearing for July 7 in Maryland to address the emergency request and other related issues.
It remained uncertain whether the government intended to deport Abrego Garcia prior to his criminal trial in the U.S., following the unsealing of charges earlier this month.
During Thursday’s call, Guynn told the judge that “there’s no timeline.”
“We do plan to comply with the orders we’ve received from this court and other courts,” he added. “But there’s no timeline for these specific proceedings.”
Abrego Garcia entered the US illegally, as Law Enforcment Today previously reported, in 2011 and, along with his co-conspirators, trafficked thousands of illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America, including MS-13 gang members, in exchange for money, the indictment alleged.
“In order to maximize profits,” kids would be forced to sit on the floor, the document said.
Abrego Garcia’s human smuggling operation was tied to a 2021 tractor-trailer crash in Mexico that killed over 50 of the 180 illegals being transported inside.
