TULSA, OK – A man out of Tulsa was arrested earlier in November after authorities say the individual “nearly hit” an officer on the interstate and proceeded to assault, to include allegedly biting, officers attempting to take the man into custody.
According to a post shared on Facebook by the Tulsa Police Department, an officer was en route to an unrelated call on the afternoon of November 5th when the officer was nearly struck by another vehicle along Interstate 244 East.
According to the Tulsa Police Department, “A GMC pickup was driving erratically on I-244 EB and nearly hit an Officer who was en route to another call. The Officer had to maneuver out of the way to avoid being struck by the truck.”
The officer allegedly almost struck by the suspect stopped the driver, who was later identified as Juan Diaz-Rodriguez after allegedly giving officers a myriad of false names and dates of birth. The initial confusion over the suspect’s identity was apparently compounded by him not having and/or providing officers with any form of driver’s license or identification.
However, according to police, the difficulties associated with the stop didn’t end with purported identification obstacles, as Tulsa Police claim Diaz-Rodriguez was far from compliant as officers attempted to take him into custody regarding the alleged erratic driving.
Per the post by the Tulsa Police Department, “While the Officer and a backing Officer were taking Diaz-Rodriguez into custody, he began pulling away and attempting to escape. Diaz-Rodriguez kicked the Officers and bit one of them.”
According to authorities, Diaz-Rodriguez managed to break free from the officers attempting to take him into custody, apparently running into oncoming traffic along the interstate in the process.
Due to the dangerous nature of interstate traffic, it seems as though Diaz-Rodriguez was not immediately followed on foot by officers, leading police to divert to establishing a perimeter amidst the area. Authorities were later notified about an attempted break-in at a residential location in the area, reportedly perpetrated by Diaz-Rodriguez.
After officers responded to the scene of the break-in, Diaz-Rodriguez was taken into custody under charges of two counts of assault and battery on an officer, obstructing justice, resisting arrest, DUI, and driving without a license.
