DURHAM, NC - Authorities with the Durham Police Department (DPD) said that two young teenagers are now in custody following a search on Tuesday evening for suspects allegedly involved in a weekend car chase where shots were fired at a state trooper in Orange County.

According to ABC11, investigators with DPD received information that two juveniles wanted in the case, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, were seen in a black Infinity in the 2900 block of Durham Chapel Hill Road. Officers attempted to approach the vehicle, but the suspects fled and hit a DPD patrol car. Investigators later found the Infinity abandoned in the 900 block of Constitution Drive. The vehicle was processed as evidence.

The teens were seen leaving the vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot. A little while later, state troopers saw who they thought were the same two suspects in another vehicle and as officers approached the car, the driver and passenger jumped out and fled on foot. This prompted a search of the area around Legion Avenue and Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard.

Later that night, DPD said that the Highway Patrol had taken one suspect into custody. However, the very next day, police clarified that the person detained was not a suspect in the case. Early in the morning on Wednesday, January 29th, DPD investigators executed a search warrant around 12:30 a.m. in the 300 block of N. Holman Street. There, investigators found the wanted 15-year-old and took them into custody. They also seized four firearms from the area.

Several hours later, around 1:00 p.m., the 14-year-old wanted suspect was taken into custody after investigators executed a search warrant in the 900 block of E. Main Street. Chapel Hill Police said that investigators are still working to identify the third suspect who ran from the scene on Saturday, January 25th.

The two teens taken into custody face numerous charges in Chapel Hill, including attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen firearm, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a minor, assault by pointing a gun, discharge of a firearm into a patrol vehicle, discharge of a firearm in city limits, resist, delay, obstruct, and four counts of damage to personal property.

FOX8 reported that during the incident, multiple vehicles were hit with gunfire and that during the police chase, the vehicle involved reached over 113 mph. Resident Avery Williams said, "They came through and we heard gunshots that woke us up in my apartment. I was pretty worried and the state trooper he was like right behind the suspects."

Col. Freddy L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol said in a statement, "I am appreciative for the persistent efforts of the Durham Police Department as well as the Chapel Hill Police Department for their work in apprehending those involved in last weekend's shooting at a State Highway Patrol Trooper."

He added, "The dangers faced by law enforcement officers are evident from the lengths at which these individuals sought to avoid capture, but the tireless work by these agencies in seeking out those responsible once again showcases the resolve of our profession."
