Shooting Near Iowa Campus Leaves Scene in Ruins, Manhunt Underway

IOWA CITY, IA – An early morning shooting at an area nightlife district near the University of Iowa earlier in April has left several wounded, including some students, according to reports. While officials don’t believe students were the intended target during the incident, the suspect(s) currently remains at large.

Local authorities reportedly responded to the 100 block of East College Street amid the city’s Pedestrian Mall area near the university at approximately 1:46 a.m. on April 19th in response to reports of a physical altercation. Upon the arrival of officers, gunfire reportedly broke out, resulting in numerous injuries.

Preliminary reports regarding the April 19th shooting near the University of Iowa campus cite five victims injured, three of which were students, according to university officials. One of the injured victims was cited as being in critical condition whereas the remaining four are said to be stable.

A statement from the University of Iowa noted of the matter, “While the investigation is in its early stages, there are no indications any university students were the intended victims.” Authorities have yet to make any arrests in the case as of this writing, but several persons of interest are actively being sought, as cited in a press release from Iowa City Public Safety.

University President Barbara Wilson issued a statement regarding the incident, highlighting that while the matter is still being investigated by law enforcement, she expressed her sympathy to those injured during the shooting and for their loved ones navigating the matter.

“While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,” Wilson stated, adding, “I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.”
