DUBUQUE, IA – Fundraising efforts have reportedly kicked off earlier in February for the Dubuque Police Department’s (DPD) annual “Shop with a Cop” program which directly benefits local youths with acquiring various back-to-school supplies.
On February 9th, the Dubuque Police Protective Association (DPPA), which serves as the bargaining unit for the DPD, issued a press release announcing that donations are actively being accepted for the DPD’s 14th annual “Shop with a Cop” event and will be accepted until the end of September.
According to the DPPA’s statement announcing the initiated fundraising efforts, the prior year’s efforts were objectively successful, highlighting in their release, “Last year, the DPPA raised over $25,000 and assisted close to 100 Dubuque children in purchasing back-to-school clothing and supplies.”
“The DPPA appreciates the past generosity of Dubuque community members, citizens, businesses, and organizations that donated to this event,” the press release emphasized, further noting, “The DPPA would also like to thank Target for their support.”
According to a Facebook post from the DPD, the accolades extended to Target appears to stem from the Dubuque store location serving as the host of the prior year’s “Shop with a Cop” event.
Iowa-based radio station 104.5 KDAT’s Tom Drake wrote of the impact “Shop with a Cop” has on the local community, noting, “It shows kids that police officers aren’t just people they see in tough moments, but as people who care about them and their future.”
Key Services will reportedly be responsible for handling a majority of the logistics behind the fundraising effort, but the DPPA did note in their press release that donations can also be directly dropped off at the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center located off of 770 Iowa Street.
While cash donations are greatly appreciated by the DPPA, the outfit noted that “those wishing to support this great cause are encouraged to donate in the form of a check made out to the Dubuque Police Protective Association.”
