Update: Atlanta Police Identify Suspect Who Stabbed Grandmother 20 Times in Unprovoked Attack

ATLANTA, GA - In an update to a previous report featured here at Law Enforcement Today, authorities have revealed the identities of the victim and suspect reportedly involved in a fatal stabbing in Atlanta that occurred on a MARTA train in late May, alleging a 25-year-old vagrant brutally murdered a 66-year-old woman unprovoked.

As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, authorities in Atlanta are actively investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred aboard a MARTA railway near the Oakland City Station on the morning of May 30. Few details were initially shared by authorities following the incident, with officials only confirming that multiple witnesses were present during the attack and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Following an arrest warrant obtained by Atlanta news outlet 11ALIVE, the victim in the case has been identified as 66-year-old Margaret Swan while the suspect accused of her murder was identified as 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews. Authorities claim the attack was unprovoked, with the victim and suspect having no apparent connection to one another.

CCTV footage referenced in the arrest warrant reportedly shows Matthews and Swan didn’t interact prior to the assailant allegedly launching the knife attack. Swan had reportedly been sitting alone for several minutes before Matthews was observed on video approaching her at approximately 11:25 a.m., with the suspect allegedly producing a knife seconds later and slicing the victim’s throat.

According to the arrest warrant, Swan began to scream after her throat was slashed and attempted to get up from her seat, but Matthews allegedly held her down and proceeded to stab her approximately 18 to 20 times before “throwing (Swan) to the floor and standing near her until the train arrived at the Oakland City Station.”

When police arrived at the scene, Matthews was reportedly observed with the knife still in his hand while exiting the train at the Oakland City Station. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Swan ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect reportedly had no defined address or phone number at the time of his arrest, nor have record searches revealed any prior criminal history within the area. Matthews is currently being held without bond at the Fulton County Jail on a charge of murder and has reportedly refused to speak with detectives following his arrest.

Swan’s daughter revealed her mother was a grandmother to five and a great grandmother to four, telling a local news outlet, “He didn't just take away a mom, but my children's grandmother was taken away.”
