SOUTH JORDAN, UT - On Friday night, January 3rd, officers with the South Jordan Police Department were involved in a shooting with an armed man who was allegedly involved in a vehicle theft. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.
According to KSLTV, authorities said that the incident started near the area of 9400 South 4600 West at 10:23 p.m. Officers arrived on scene to what appeared to be a vehicle theft. A press release from the police department said, "Officers on scene made contact with a male inside a vehicle. The subject fired at officers and officers returned fire."
The man then fled on foot and was later found in a backyard nearby. Officers from "multiple agencies" closed in on him and authorities said, "During the second interaction with the subject shots were fired. The subject was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment, where he died." The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as per protocol while an investigation is completed.
This was the fourth officer-involved shooting death in Utah in just five days. On Monday, December 30th, 43-year-old Nathan Paul was shot by police in West Point, Weber County. Deputies were called to a domestic violence incident at a home near 670 N. and 2300 West. When deputies arrived, they were informed by family members that Paul was possibly having a mental health episode.
Deputies said they responded to the house the night before for a similar situation. Paul was sent to the hospital, but was released the next morning. The Clinton City Police Department assisted in attempts to de-escalate the situation when officers found Paul was armed. As the situation continued, police said two Clinton officers discharged their weapons, striking Paul. He was pronounced dead on scene.
On Wednesday, January 1st, West Valley police responded to 3310 W. Enternado Avenue and discovered the bodies of 63-year-old Terri Bertelsen and her husband, 67-year-old Kerry Bertelsen. Investigators believe they were shot by their adult son, who was then fatally shot by police during a confrontation. He has been identified as 35-year-old Erik Bertelsen; he was released from prison in December.
Erik allegedly got into an argument with his parents before they were killed. Police are investigating and have yet to announce a motive for the homicides. Erik had been in and out of prison for parole violations on a fairly regular basis for over a decade. On Friday, January 3rd, police fatally shot a man in Riverton who was wanted in connection with an arson investigation in Salt Lake City.
The man, identified as 27-year-old Tanner Cottrell was a wanted suspect in a residential arson investigation that occurred on Wednesday, January 1st. Investigators learned that the suspect had access to firearms and body armor during the arson investigation. At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2nd, Cottrell was located in Orem and law enforcement began tracking his location throughout Utah and Salt Lake City counties.
The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) said, "At some point, law enforcement initiated a pursuit of the suspect who was driving a truck. The suspect refused to stop." The truck was allegedly stolen. As the pursuit continued, the man fired multiple rounds at officers who followed and in turn, the officers used spike strips to flatten the truck's tires. However, he continued to drive.
The pursuit ended at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3rd, when the man crashed the truck "at a high rate of speed." The crash caused the truck to flip and land upside-down. SLCPD said, "There was at the termination point, an exchange of gunfire with officers and we believe with the suspect." Cottrell was confirmed dead at the scene.
