Noncitizen Utah Woman Accused of Torturing Baby Girl With Hot Steam, Reportedly ‘Wished’ She Had a Boy

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A 36-year-old woman out of Salt Lake City was arrested in late September after authorities say she brought her 4-month-old daughter to an area hospital with severe burns, with medical staff finding evidence of ongoing physical abuse that included “fractures and a brain bleed.”

On September 30th, Lizbeth Hurtado-Breton was arrested on charges of child torture and aggravated child abuse after she admitted her 4-month-old daughter to Primary Children's Hospital for burns to the infant’s face and body that same day.

According to authorities, the suspect’s husband, who has not been named, told hospital staff that his wife was attempting to perform a “home remedy” that involved allegedly suspending the child over a steaming pot of water. However, police say the burns the infant sustained were so severe that her skin could be wiped off her face with a napkin by the child’s father.

The apparent injuries the infant was admitted to the hospital for weren’t the only concerning matters discovered by medical staff, as evidence of “several bone fractures and a brain bleed” was found as well. Hurtado-Breton's husband reportedly told investigators that he also had once come home to see his daughter’s mouth taped shut, which, when he questioned his wife as to the reasoning behind it, Hurtado-Breton allegedly told her husband that their daughter “would not stop crying.”

Additional evidence of abuse was shared by the suspect’s husband with police, reportedly providing video and photographic evidence to investigators of aggressive force-feedings conducted by Hurtado-Breton, which allegedly involved taping the infant’s arms behind her back and “shoving a baby bottle down the baby's throat, causing the baby to choke on the milk and not be able to breathe.”

During his interview with investigators, the suspect’s husband reportedly told police he suspects the alleged abuse carried out by his wife is due to her having “wished the baby had been a boy,” noting that the victim’s older siblings haven’t been subjected to anything of the sort by the suspect.

When police interviewed Hurtado-Breton about the numerous injuries sustained by her daughter, the suspect allegedly told authorities that she “did not think about how the steam would feel” on the child’s face, and attempted to qualify her taping the infant’s mouth shut because it was the “easiest” way to keep her pacifier in. As for the fractures and brain bleed the infant sustained, Hurtado-Breton reportedly told police she “couldn’t remember” how the child sustained those injuries.

According to Salt Lake County Jail records, Hurtado-Breton appears to be a non-citizen of the United States, citing her country of birth ("COB" on the police report form) and citizenship as “Mexico” with no proper state identification. Additionally, bond for the charges she’s currently facing has not been set as of this writing.
