Washington police officer run over, dragged and critically wounded by fleeing suspect

MILTON, WA - A Police officer in Washington was injured while detaining a suspect, having been dragged by the suspect vehicle. Officer Erik Haney of the Milton Police Department (MPD) was attempting to take a suspect into custody on an outstanding drug warrant near the
Pierce/King County line Wednesday when he was dragged through the parking lot by the escaping suspect and run over. He sustained serious injuries to his legs and hands, MPD officials said.

According to The Seattle Times, Officer Jacob Wilcox responded to the scene and rendered lifesaving aid to the badly wounded officer until Fire and Rescue paramedics took over.

MPD Chief Tony Hernandez described the incident in detail. Officers Haney and Wilcox had approached the suspect's Black SUV to make the arrest when the man took off running to his vehicle, according to Fox13. "They were chasing him. He jumped in the vehicle," said Hernandez. "There was a struggle that happened as they got to the car."

Wilcox shouted at the suspect to stop, warning him as he started to move the vehicle.

"They were chasing him. He jumped in the vehicle," he continued. "There was a struggle that happened as they got to the car." "The officer fell from the vehicle and then the vehicle ran over both of his legs," Chief Hernandez said. "It escalated quite quickly."

The chief reviewed how Haney was injured saying that Wilcox "told officer Haney, ‘Hey, let him go.’ Officer Haney said, ‘I can’t.’ His arm was stuck behind the suspect. The suspect then took off, dragging the officer, and the officer fell from the vehicle and then subsequently had both legs ran over."

Officer Haney sustained crushing injuries to his upper thighs causing a severe break and critical injuries. Officer Wilcox quickly applied a tourniquet to his fellow officer while other units took up the pursuit. While Officer Haney was listed in critical condition, Chief Hernandez has announced that he's doing better and is expected to survive.

The police chief commended Officers Haney and Wilcox both for their "courage and dedication," adding, "It could have been a lot worse than it was we could have had two dead individuals."

Kent police caught up with the suspect shortly after, deploying a Pursuit Intervention Technique, or PIT, maneuver to disable his vehicle running him off of the road. At that time, 32-year-old Jory Edward Nelson was arrested and booked into jail on charges of assault in the first degree, vehicular assault, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, failure to remain at an injury accident, and attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle.
