LACEY, WA – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for a criminal illegal alien out of the state of Washington that reportedly went ignored despite the individual allegedly being responsible for a multi-vehicle pile-up in a December crash while operating a semi-truck without a commercial driver’s license.
According to a press release from Homeland Security, local authorities out of Lacey, Washington, reportedly refused to honor an ICE detainer placed on 40-year-old Juan Hernandez-Santos, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico who was arrested earlier in December following a multi-vehicle crash allegedly caused by him.
Seattle-based outlet KOMO News reported on the December 4th collision allegedly caused by Santos, noting he was taken into custody after Washington State Patrol found he was operating a semi-truck that was hauling vehicles while being uninsured and driving the commercial vehicle without a valid license.
Trooper Kameron Watts said at the time of Santos’ arrest, “In this situation, there is a lot of negligence involved. We actually dispatched some commercial vehicle enforcement officers to the scene to do a full-blown inspection of the truck itself, and the paperwork all semi-truck drivers are supposed to have on them.”
Four people were reportedly injured in the collision, which investigators say was sparked due to Santos allegedly engaging in “speeds too fast for conditions and following too closely.”
Aside from Santos’ newly attained charges of operating a commercial vehicle without a license, Homeland Security highlighted his prior criminal offenses which included driving without a license back in 2008 in L.A. County, another 2008 arrest for DUI and hit-and-run, a 2018 charge for possession of a controlled substance, and a 2020 arrest for another DUI.
Furthermore, Santos was already removed from the country twice, once in 2005 and another time in 2006, ergo having committed felony illegal reentry twice since his two past removals. Despite the sizeable criminal history and his latest charge out of Washington, local authorities abided by standing sanctuary policies and refused to honor the issued ICE detainer.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement regarding the matter, saying, “This dangerous illegal alien has a criminal history including multiple DUIs, possessing a controlled substance, and two prior removals from the U.S. He was a walking public safety threat and illegally was driving a massive 18-wheeler when he caused a six-car pile-up involving a school bus on the highway in Washington.”
While McLaughlin noted that she was thankful that no children were present on the bus involved in the collision, she went on to emphasize, “This story could have had a very different tragic ending. The sanctuary politicians in Washington failed once again to protect American citizens by refusing to honor our ICE arrest detainer.”
