West Virginia Sheriff Lieutenant Signs Off for the Last Time After Almost Three Decades

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV – After serving his community for 26 years, a Kanawha County Sheriff’s lieutenant signed off for the last time this past September, with the lieutenant, dispatch, and his family - both blood and blue – sharing words of mutual respect and gratitude regarding his career in law enforcement.

On September 30th, Lt. Delbert J. Roush III of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office hung up his proverbial hat after serving the community for 26 years.

In a Facebook post commemorating Lt. Roush’s service, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office afforded insight into the storied career of the now-retired sheriff’s lieutenant.

“Throughout his career, he wore many hats — deputy in Field Operations, President of the Deputy Sheriff Association, Circuit Court Bailiff for the Honorable Judge Duke Bloom, and most recently the Supervisor of Field Operations D-Shift,” the post read.

“His leadership, experience, and sense of duty have left a lasting mark on this agency. Lt. Roush will be greatly missed, but his impact will carry on through the deputies he worked beside and the community he faithfully served.”

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office also accompanied the abovementioned social media post with a heartfelt video showcasing Lt. Roush’s final shift sign off, where an exchange between the sheriff’s lieutenant and dispatch made Lt. Roush clearly emotional.

After Lt. Roush signaled his final sign off to dispatch, dispatch stated in response, “We thank you for 26 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Kanawha County. Your unwavering integrity, bravery, loyalty, and leadership set a standard that can never be matched. For over a century, the Roush name has been proudly taught to public service in Kanawha County. Today, we honor a legacy and your remarkable career. Thank you, Lieutenant Roush, and best wishes in your future endeavors.”

More of Lt. Roush’s colleagues poured in over the radio to extend their immense gratitude for his service.

Even the sheriff’s lieutenant’s son chiming in with, “Hey dad, this is your son. You are my hero, and I'm so proud of you. Thank you for showing me what integrity, bravery, and dedication truly look like. I love you, and I always look up to you. Thank you for being my dad. I love you.”

Lt. Roush emotionally replied to the accolades during his sign off, responding to dispatch with, “Metro, serving the citizens of Kanawha County has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I hope that leaving, I have instilled the honor, integrity, trust, and loyalty amongst those I've worked with and trained.”
