WASHINGTON, D.C. - Financial disclosures released by the White House and reported Tuesday revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Douglas Emhoff made repeated donations to a non-profit organization advocating for anti-law enforcement and pro-sanctuary city causes.
The group, Legal Aid DC, is a nonprofit law group providing legal services to Washington residents according to Fox News. The group, in addition to its more widely known goals, has called for the aggressive defunding of police budgets as well as a reduction in patrols of areas riddled with crime.
According to The Washington Examiner, the organization received a $1,000 donation from the second couple in 2024, citing a copy of Harris & Emhoff's joint tax return. Their 2021 tax return indicated a previous donation in the same amount the outlet found. White House releases from 2021, 2022, and 2023, obtained by The New York Post confirmed this.
In the context of the 2020 BLM riots, Legal Aid DC shared an article that praised the group while BLM rioters were attacking police officers and burning cities across the country. The group wrote, "As Legal Aid's Amanda Korber noted in the article, we are concerned, especially given the ongoing protest movement, about any solution that involves more police and policing in DC public housing. #BlackLivesMatterDC"
White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates attempted to address the story telling The Post, “This organization helps clients who are suffering from domestic violence, and their other contributors include high-profile conservative law firms. We’re proud to have reversed the historic rise in murders President Biden and Vice President Harris inherited from the Trump Administration, and to have replaced it with the lowest violent crime rate in nearly 50 years.” In a statement during the 2020 BLM Riots, Legal Aid DC said, “Legal Aid stands in solidarity with those speaking out, demonstrating, and demanding a country and society that will treat every one of its residents with dignity and respect. We at Legal Aid unequivocally affirm that Black Lives Matter. We understand that the recurring violence—literal and figurative—against black Americans is a manifestation of our society’s persistent, deep-seated racism, and we must all vow to end it."
Per the Examiner, Legal Aid DC also supported a Washington, D.C. law to make the nation's Capital a "permanent" sanctuary city, harshly curtailing any cooperation between city police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2020.
Federation for American Immigration Reform spokesman Ira Mehlman told the outlet the country “has seen the consequences of sanctuary policies play out over and over again.” He observed that the Biden-Harris administration "simply do not want our immigration laws enforced and they’re prepared to let criminals walk rather than turning them over to ICE to be removed,” Mehlman said. “It should be a matter of routine that a local jurisdiction will comply with ICE.”
