How a Brutal Attack Ended With a Desert Body Discovery

WONDER VALLEY, CA – A 60-year-old man in a wheelchair was found deceased in a remote desert area in San Bernardino County earlier in April, with authorities saying the victim was killed in a physical altercation in Highland before being discarded in the desert.

On April 10th, authorities say an individual traveling in the area of Gammel Road in Wonder Valley stumbled upon a deceased male along the roadway, with responding authorities describing the deceased as “partially sitting in a wheelchair” when discovered.

San Bernardino Sheriff’s deputies reportedly observed apparent “trauma to the victim’s body and quickly determined the victim had been murdered somewhere else and left on the road,” per a release from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department. Investigators identified a suspect, 38-year-old Jimmy Rodriguez, whom they allege had gotten into some sort of “physical altercation” in Highland that turned fatal.

“Detectives also determined that after the murder occurred, Rodriguez drove to Wonder Valley and left the victim in the roadway,” the press release from the sheriff’s office noted. A CBS News report regarding the investigation highlighted the distance between where the alleged murder occurred and where the victim’s body was discovered was approximately 100 miles apart.

The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released as of this writing, pending notification of the victim’s next of kin, with authorities also having not shared the nature of the relationship between the suspect and victim.

A motive for the alleged murder has not been shared publicly by investigators, nor have officials detailed what specific evidence led them to identify Rodriguez as the primary suspect in the case. The suspect is currently being held without bail at the San Bernardino County Sheriff Central Detention Center.

The investigation is still ongoing, with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department asking that anyone with information related to the case contact their Homicide Detail unit at 909-890-4904.
