SPOKANE, WA – Spokane’s local police and fire district teamed up with the Special Olympics Organization of Washington earlier in August for a fundraising event meant to benefit local Special Olympics teams, such as the Spokane Pacers.
On August 16th, Spokane County Fire District 9 as well as the Spokane Police Department held their annual fundraising event dubbed “Cop and Fire on Top Water Fight” outside the Fred Myers located off North Division, with the latest event benefitting the Spokane Pacers Special Olympics team.
Weeks earlier, the two first-responder outfits held another fundraiser benefitting the Lilac City Warriors Special Olympics program.
Local reporting on the latest fundraising event detailed how the Cop and Fire on Top Water Fight has been a fundraising tradition since 2022, allowing community members to support a noble cause while also connecting with local law enforcement in the process.
One firefighter said of the festivities, “It’s awesome. I mean, this is what it’s all about for us,” adding, “It’s about taking care of our community whether it be supporting Special Olympics, responding to incidents, being there in our community day in and day out.”
One of the attendees of the fundraiser were among the many delighted to participate in the endeavor, saying, “Being down here to support Special Olympics was a fun Saturday afternoon. I’d do it again any weekend they asked us to do it.”
Another participant was pleased to see the joy emanating from their local Special Olympics athletes, saying, “I'm watching the smiles on the Special Olympians' faces. They were really happy to be able to get the fire chief wet today.”
The latest iteration of the annual Cop and Fire on Top Water Fight is part of a broader fundraising entity known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which has been raising funds for the Special Olympics across the county for decades since its inception back in 1981.
