How One Anonymous Tip Triggered A Police Probe

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI - An officer with the Prairie du Chien Police Department has been placed on administrative leave as authorities conduct an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

On Monday, November 10, Police Chief Kyle Teynor confirmed that Officer Dwight Kussmaul was placed on leave effective October 21 following an investigation that began on October 17 with an anonymous CrimeStoppers tip, News8Now reported.

The investigation took a turn when initial findings revealed that the tip pointed to an officer who was not involved in the alleged conduct. However, investigators later identified Kussmaul as potentially connected to the behavior described in the anonymous tip.

As of this writing, the Prairie de Chien Police Department has not released any additional details about the nature of the allegations and the investigation remains ongoing.

In Canton, Massachusetts, a member of the Canton Police Department who testified in the first Karen Read trial has been placed on administrative leave after being accused of misconduct. On Monday, November 10, the department announced that Sgt. Sean Goode was placed on leave, WCVB reported.

The town was notified on October 24 about the allegations of misconduct. "The town engaged an independent investigator to conduct a thorough administrative investigation into the allegations of misconduct," a town official said in a statement.

Read was accused and later acquitted in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. In Read's first trial, Goode, an 18-year veteran of the department, testified that he'd been working as a patrol supervisor the night O'Keefe died. He was on the list as a possible witness for Read's second trial.

In Monday's announcement, acting Canton Chief Joe Perkins said he learned of the allegations against Goode during an investigation of a former member of a different law enforcement agency, but did not specify if Goode's alleged misconduct was related to the Read case.

"The town and the town's police department take all allegations of misconduct seriously. Members of the town's police department are expected to perform their duties in a professional manner. The town is committed to providing the quality and level of service that the citizens of Canton deserve from their police department," he said.

"To that end, we will take the necessary steps to ensure that actions by individual officers do not jeopardize the quality and level of service," the statement added.
