A New Jersey woman allegedly armed with a knife was fatally shot by responding police

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ - State prosecutors with the New Jersey Attorney General's Office have announced that they are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened on Sunday, July 28th. At this time, neither the officer nor the subject have been identified.

According to NJ.com, the woman who was fatally shot was allegedly having a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife when officers approached her apartment in Fort Lee. Officers were called to the Pinnacle apartments on Main Street at around 1:25 a.m. by a man who reported that his sister was holding a knife, having a mental health crisis, and needed to go to the hospital.

Upon arriving on scene, officers spoke to the caller while in the hallway outside of the apartment. While they were talking to the caller, the sister and another woman were reportedly inside the apartment. The woman told police not to come in and shut the door. As additional officers arrived, police knocked on the door and asked the women to open up.

Prosecutors said that the women refused to comply with the officers' orders and that is when police forced open the door. In a statement, prosecutors said, "As the sister approached the officers in the hallway, one officer fired a single shot, striking the female in the chest." As of this writing, the woman's name has not been released.

Officers provided medical aid to the woman and she was transported to Englewood Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. Police recovered a knife from the scene. According to ABC News, prosecutors said that it is unclear if the woman was holding the knife at the time she approached the officers. Under state law, the attorney general's office is required to investigate all officer-involved shoots. Any evidence gathered from the investigation is presented to a grand jury, which will then rule of criminal charges against police are warranted.

In a separate incident, authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Dyersburg, Tennessee. According to WSILTV, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) are reviewing evidence to figure out what led up to an officer-involved shooting on Sunday, July 28th.

Preliminary information indicates that Dyersburg officers went to a home in the 1400 block of Keats Street for a report of someone trying to harm themselves and officers. Once on scene, responding officers tried to de-escalate the situation with a man that was reportedly armed with a firearm. The armed man refused to drop the gun and pointed it at the officers.

At that time, officers shot the armed man, who has been identified as 36-year-old Courtney Alexander. Authorities said that Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
