Woman attacks police with statue, officers hospitalized in Marshfield incident

MARSHFIELD, MA - In a recent incident in Marshfield, two police officers were attacked while doing a well-being check at an apartment. The person they were checking on, Gina Martell, has a history of being violent with the police. Due to this previous knowledge, the officers went to the apartment with a mental health worker.

When they got to Martell's home, she started yelling at them and acting strange. The mental health worker thought Martell could be a danger to herself and others, so they decided she needed to go to the hospital. But Martell didn't want to go, and that's when things got really bad.

Martell attacked the officers with a ceramic statue, hitting one of them on the head. It caused a deep cut, and the officer started bleeding profusely. The Taser was ineffective in attempting to subdue Martell, who continued attacking the officers.

Martell, weighing 300 pounds and standing at 5'9", elbowed and kicked the officers who were trying to stop her. Officers finally managed to get Martell under control and into an ambulance.

The two police officers were injured badly enough that they also had to get treatment at the hospital via ambulance. Both officers are expected to be okay. The police say it could have been a lot worse, and they're glad the officers are going to make a full recovery.

One of the injured officers was identified as Marshfield Police Sergeant Rooney. He's pictured in the photo above bleeding from the head.

Marshfield Police Chief Phillip Tavares is upset because his officers are dealing with more and more violent situations like this. He says there's a big problem with mental health in the country, and not enough is being done about it.

Martell is now facing serious charges.

The chief said that despite the danger, the responding officers "acted with extreme professionalism and restraint during the entire encounter."

I don’t care if the individual has had mental issues or not, if this pos individual had injured me or one of my officers, she would have sustained serious injuries enough to end up in the morgue.
