How Community Support Will Keep a Fallen Hero’s Memory Alive

YAKIMA COUNTY, WA - Fundraising efforts for the Yakima Law Enforcement Memorial Garden honoring Sgt. Joseph Deccio and other fallen officers is underway.

With the first fundraiser having occurred earlier Wednesday, the upcoming fundraiser will be on March 11 at a Union Gap restaurant. The memorial garden will be located on land immediately north of the Richard Zais Law and Justice Center at 200 S. Third Street, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported. Plans include landscaping and sidewalks, a black or gray granite monument with a plaque on a small plaza and two benches and a flagpole.

The March 11 fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse, according to a Facebook post by the Yakima Police Patrolmans Association. The restaurant, located at 25 E. Valley Mall Blvd, will be open from 4pm to 10pm and the proceeds will go toward the memorial garden.

Patrons must have access to the restaurant's QR code so they may scan it and ensure that proceeds are directed toward the memorial garden.

Supporters plan to dedicate the memorial garden before the fifth anniversary of Deccio's death. He died after experiencing a medical issue while on duty on August 3, 2021. A 15-year-veteran of the Yakima Police Department (YPD), Deccio died after four hours of lifesaving efforts. He was just 38-years-old.

Deccio will be the first officer recognized in the memorial garden. As of the end of February, $13,880 has been raised. The estimated cost for the memorial garden is $40,871.

"To bring this vision to life, we are seeking support from both our department and the community through donations and sponsorships," Yakima Police Chief Shawn Boyle said in a statement on social media. "Your contributions will help fund essential elements of the memorial garden, including landscaping, the monument itself, and security enhancements."

Members of the Yakima Police Patrolmans Association Benevolent Fund committee are handling the memorial garden fundraising. The committee also organizes an annual August golf tournament to benefit the Deccio Memorial Scholarship program. The program provides financial assistance to the Deccio family and other members of the police department during difficult times.
