Axe-Wielding West Virginia Man Arrested Following Early Morning Attack

NITRO, WV- A 77-year-old West Virginia man is in custody for the attempted murder of his wife after he allegedly tried to break down a bedroom door with an axe and kick it in, PEOPLE Magazine reports.

Warren Crowder was arrested after police were called to a residence just after 4 a.m. on February 2. A female caller from the home told 911 operators that her husband, Crowder, was trying to break down the bedroom door with an axe. She also alleged that she “smelled smoke and believed the male was trying to deliberately start a fire inside the residence,” the complaint read.

Responding officers saw the victim “through the bedroom window where she was hiding,” while seeing Crowder “attempting to kick in the bedroom door,” according to the complaint.

“While speaking with the accused, he admitted to shooting a .357 Magnum multiple times through the bedroom door in an attempt to gain access to the bedroom where his wife was,” the complaint said. “Multiple gunshots were observed embedded in the bedroom door.”

Crowder told police in an interview and “gave a confession and stated he shot multiple rounds into the door because he was angry, knowing that [his wife] was hiding 3 or 4 feet in front of the door in a bed.”

Crowder is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Crowder is also facing four counts of wanton endangerment involving a firearm in connection with the incident. He is scheduled for a preliminary court appearance on Feb. 11.

PEOPLE reached out to his defense attorney, however he could not be reached.
