EMERYVILLE, CA – City councilman Kalimah Priforce was making the rounds in the Bay Street Mall area, speaking with local business owners about the impact that the increased level of burglaries and thefts were having on their bottom lines when that crime was experienced first-hand.

Crime in the San Francisco Bay area has been increasing exponentially in recent months.

Turns out, while Priforce was speaking about crime, he was becoming the victim of it; Someone went through his bike bag druing his conversation. He filed a report with police saying that his wallet and keys were missing.

"A lot of stores that can’t afford private guards need panic buttons, a direct line to the police, so they don’t have to actually pick up the phone [and] call the police dispatch," Priforce said, keeping a positive attitude about what had happened.

“The thing is, they’re not going to get much from it," he joked about the theft, pointing out that he is on "a politician’s budget."

He then returned to the point of his visit in a conversation with Fox News, discussing what needs to happen to better safeguard business owners and the rest of their community.

"Better prepared, better cameras, better surveillance, better ways of being able to protect our local businesses," he said. "Unfortunately, we place more emphasis on luxury-rate market apartments in our cities than we do on our public safety."

Emeryville, which lies between Oakland and Berkeley in Alameda County, has been in the news recently, as has Alameda County. The District Attorney there is potentially facing a recall election for her soft on crime policies.

Emeryville, with a population of lust under 13,000, was the scene of a “mob of teens” that entered a Bath & Body Works. They intimidated the store’s staff to the degree that they locked themselves in a storeroom for protection.

That scene resulted in shots being fired and at least one person being stabbed.

According to Fox, “Emeryville Mayor John Bauters thanked the local police department for ‘their display of professionalism and resourcefulness in restoring safety for our community.

Our ability to do this was made possible through the strong relationships our city and its law enforcement leaders share with our neighboring jurisdictions and partner agencies.’"

San Francisco saw their District Attorney Chesa Boudin recalled over his anti-police, soft-on-crime progressive policies. Now, Alameda County may see the same result.

Many have drawn a correlation between the rise in thefts and other crimes in the Bay Area and the individuals that often refuse to charge and try many alleged criminals, releasing them on small amounts of bail, if any at all, only to have them back out on the streets committing the same, and in some instances, more egregious and violent crimes.
