California Teen Survives After Father Allegedly Shoots Family, Then Himself

LAKEWOOD, CA - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is actively investigating a double murder followed by a suicide that occurred inside a Lakewood home earlier this week, which authorities say was carried out by the father in the household.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on January 15, L.A. County deputies responded to a home located off Lorelei Avenue near South Street in response to a reported shooting inside the residence. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 19-year-old female running out of the home who claimed that her father tried to shoot her.

Upon entering the residence, deputies discovered the body of 52-year-old Hector Lionel Alfaro lying on the floor of the den, having suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the torso.

In separate rooms, deputies also discovered the bodies of Alfaro’s 48-year-old wife and their 17-year-old daughter, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds to their upper torso.

When interviewing the sole survivor, who is the deceased couple’s eldest daughter, she reportedly told investigators that she was woken up by the gunshots inside the home. Shortly after waking, she told investigators that her father entered her bedroom and fired several shots in her direction, but she was miraculously unharmed during the shooting.

No possible motive in the incident has been shared by officials as of this writing, with LASD Captain Dan Holguin describing the entire matter as tragic during a press briefing earlier in January, saying, “Obviously, this incident is a tragedy to the City of Lakewood. Lakewood is one of the safest cities in L.A. County.”

A family member of the victims, Jorge Fuentes, spoke with the media regarding the sole survivor and the complex emotions she’s currently facing in the wake of her near-death at the hands of her father.

“Luckily, she was a survivor of this tragedy,” Fuentes stated, adding, “Just trying to deal with the consequences of their father’s doing. It’s hard to process. Pain. Anger. How a person [who] is supposed to be a protector and a father to those girls [c]ould have done something so hideous.”
