Chicago: 25-Year-Old Expectant Father Brutally Beaten to Death in Bar Fight

CHICAGO, IL - A 25-year-old man who was expecting his second child died from a head injury following a physical altercation that played out at a Chicago bar this past March, with law enforcement actively searching for four persons of interest allegedly connected to the fatal incident.

During the early morning hours of March 24, a physical confrontation that occurred outside the Tune Up Bar in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood resulted in the death of 25-year-old Xander Kazanowski. Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m., where they found Kazanowski unresponsive. An area hospital declared the victim deceased shortly after his arrival.

An autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office in the days following the incident determined Kazanowski had died due to blunt force trauma to the head, with the medical examiner ruling his death a homicide. Four suspects that were reportedly captured on surveillance footage around the time of the incident are currently at large, according to authorities.

The Chicago Police Department released a video of the persons of interest who were reportedly seen entering the establishment shortly before Kazanowski suffered the fatal injury. The suspects are described as three males and one female.

Cook County Crime Stoppers has issued a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the apprehension of those responsible for the homicide. The organization's executive director, Paul Rutherford, said of the incident, “This was a brutal and senseless act of violence. Someone in the community knows what happened, and we are urging them to do the right thing.”

A GoFundMe established for Kazanowski's family revealed he was the father of a young daughter and was expecting a son. The GoFundMe is meant to help the two children who will now grow up without their father.

“The family is hoping to memorialize his vibrant, creative soul by providing for the needs, care, and future of his children: daughter Thea and his expected son, John,” the fundraiser’s description reads in part, adding, “Xander lived boldly with ambition and individuality, inspiring everyone around him. He was a devoted son, brother, father, partner, and friend.”
