CHICAGO, IL – A Chicago Police officer was killed while another officer remains in critical condition following a shooting at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital earlier in April, with the alleged gunman having been taken into custody following the incident, according to authorities.
Officials have identified the Chicago Police Department (CPD) officer killed in the April 25th shooting at Endeavor Health as 38-year-old Officer John Bartholomew, citing the fallen officer as a 10-year veteran of the department. The second officer critically injured during the incident has only been identified as a 57-year-old male who has served the department for 21 years.
Authorities say the shooting occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. on April 25th while the alleged shooter was already in police custody for a separate alleged robbery and was being transported to the hospital by law enforcement for observation. Somehow the unnamed suspect was able to get ahold of a firearm inside of the hospital and open fire on officers.
CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling stated during a press conference regarding the incident that the suspect fled the hospital on foot following the shooting, leading to a brief manhunt which culminated roughly two hours later with the suspect being taken into custody at a residence in the city’s Lincoln Square neighborhood.
“These are the dangers of policing, and once again, these officers know it. They understand it. But they still go out, and they do it. Every single day that an officer gets up and puts on his or her uniform, they don't really know if they're ever going to return home,” Superintendent Snelling told reporters during the press briefing.
A procession was held in honor of Officer Bartholomew which took place from Advocate Illinois Masonic to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The unnamed officer injured during the incident was last cited as being in critical condition and remains in treatment at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
