Community rallies to support officer diagnosed with stage 4 cancer who ceased chemotherapy treatment after 12-year battle

NORMAN, OK - In 2012, Norman Police Officer Jenny Bryan was diagnosed with cancer. Now, over 10 years later, she has ceased chemotherapy and her entire community is rallying to support her and her family.

According to KOCO News, the leaders of Norman along with those in the community are making it their goal to ensure Bryan's family is cared for in the years to come. Norman Mayor Larry Heikkila said in a statement, "She doesn't feel well, but she's doing her job. She's still staying on until she can no longer do that, and I don't know how long that'll be."

Officer Bryan is a dedicated single mother to four kids and is the sole provider for her family. The website, Warrior Jenny, describes her as someone who always has a smile on her face and who has always had a warrior spirit, staying positive as she fights the battle she has endured against stage 4 cancer.

Some other words used to describe Bryan are, "hardworking, bubbly and dedicated." Heikkila, said that Bryan is full of fight adding, "She's way too young to be terminal." He said, "She's working; that's the kind of gal she is. She's out in a patrol car being a cop. She's tough, I'll tell you what, I would not fool with that girl." In a statemen to KOCO News, the Norman Police Department (NPD) said, "Jenny is a pillar of strength and resilience within the Norman Police Department. She is a committed law enforcement officer who continues to work tirelessly for the Norman community."

The statement continued, "Despite facing an arduous and relentless illness, Jenny remains committed to her many roles both inside and outside of NPD. Her service to others and the community remains unwavering. Her courage and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all, highlighting her profound strength and selflessness.

"We continue to stand with Jenny and her family in her ongoing battle with cancer; standing in solidarity and offering our support as she navigates this difficult journey."

Heikkila and other community leaders are wrapping their arms around Bryan and her four children. The mayor said, "We'd like to collect $100,000, pay off the mortgage so the kids can be safe and stay where they are. She's been a great police officer. She works real well with the community. She's just somebody I wish we could keep around 'til they get old and grey."

On the website, Warrior Jenny Bryan is proudly described as, "Inspiring. She has had a warrior spirit, always maintaining a positive attitude and many would never know the battle she has endured against cancer.

"Through her journey, she has exemplified courage, honor, discipline, resilience, and a commitment to protecting others. It involves mental and physical strength, as well as a strong sense of duty and integrity. Jenny has embodied these qualities throughout her battles against cancer."

Jenny still wakes up every morning and puts on her uniform that she wears proudly. She raises her four kids and still finds time to hit the gym, cheer on her kids at their games, and always has a smile to share.
