LYNWOOD, CA- In a horrific story out of this city in Los Angeles County, a mother and father, with help from a grandmother, are accused of “killing and torturing” their 8-year-old son, which involved stuffing the body of the young boy “in a cooler filled with ice” afterward, Law & Crime reports.
The boy’s parents, Destiny Harrison, 25, Daniel Monzon, 25, and the paternal grandmother, Ana Carcamo Zarceno, were arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Isaiah Harrison, the LA District Attorney’s Office announced.
“The horrific abuse that Isaiah endured is made even worse by the fact that, as alleged, it was at the hands of the people who were meant to love and protect him,” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a press release issued last week. “Our office is committed to ensuring that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions and that justice will be secured for Isaiah.”
All three suspects face charges of murder, torture, and child abuse resulting in death. Monzon and Zarceno are additionally charged with being accessories after the fact.
Arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 31.
The criminal complaint alleges that Isaiah was abused by his mother, father, and paternal grandmother “over a long period of time.” He succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 24, and his body was found days later in the cooler. A medical examiner has not yet specified the exact cause of death.
KTLA reported that three other minor children–16, 13, and 9 months–were found at the Lynwood apartment where the child was killed. They were taken into protective custody by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services.
According to neighbors, they said Harrison would be seen walking her dog and picking the children up from the school bus, telling KTLA that she was calm and “seemed like a normal person.”
Another neighbor, Cristian Torres, told KNBC that he often saw the children playing outside while Harrison would watch them.
“She would always be out there with her dog,” Torres said. “She would smile, would say ‘hi.’ Nothing out of the ordinary.”
Bond was set at $2 million for each of the offenders. In blue California, they are looking at 32 years to life in prison if convicted.
“This is an unimaginable and horrific tragedy,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement. “My heart breaks for what the other children in this home just have experienced, and it’s critical that our Department of Children and Family Services do everything possible to support them and keep them safe in protective custody.”
