PENN HILLS, PA - On New Year's Day a man was found in the front yard of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds after his grandmother pulled the trigger on him.
According to WPXI, investigators said that an argument between family members inside a home on Saylong Drive led to the grandmother, Debra Morton, shooting her grandson. The incident happened just before 9:00 a.m. when Morton called 911, telling dispatchers that her grandson threatened her so she shot him.
Morton told police she overheard the victim arguing with a witness, later identified by investigators as the victim's brother. Morton said she went into her bedroom, grabbed a gun and covered it with a shirt. She said her grandson came to her room, started yelling at her and threatened to damage the house before allegedly telling his grandmother "I'm gonna tear you up."
That's when Morton started shooting at her grandson. Penn Hills Police Chief Ronald Como said, "The threats that were made — if you want to call them threats, were very vague by the victim. After the original discharge of a firearm, there was a separation of the two."
Morton allegedly chased the victim down the stairs and continued to fire the gun, even leaning out the window and shooting toward the open garage door. Como said that a modified PFA order was in place, allowing the victim and his brother to be in the home. Morton told police the two brothers have a history of being aggressive and having destructive behavior.
CBS News reported that Morton is facing charges if criminal attempted homicide, possession of a weapon, and aggravated assault. When asked if investigators are looking into the possibility of self-defense or any additional charges being field, Chief Como said, "A lot of research was done. A lot of investigating yesterday and consulting with the DA's Office when the charges were filed and what charges to file."
Police said the victim was found in the neighboring yard and was shot at least twice. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but remains stable. As of this writing, Morton remains in the Allegheny County Jail.
In a separate incident, a teenage girl is in the hospital after being struck by a bullet that entered her home in Chester, Pennsylvania, while she was playing video games. According to NBC Philadelphia, the incident happened shortly after midnight on Wednesday, January 1st in a home along the 1100 block of Keystone Road.
David Nelson said that his 16-year-old stepdaughter had been playing video games inside of her room when he heard gunshots and then her screaming. He said, "I heard her screaming and hollering. I came upstairs and that's when she told me to call 911." Nelson said a bullet pierced through his stepdaughter's bedroom and struck her in the spine.
She was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated. Nelson said the bullet nearly hit the girl's aorta, the body's main artery. He said, "She's in pain but she is conscious. But she knows what happened. She knows where she's at."
Nelson said he doesn't believe his stepdaughter was targeted and instead thinks the person responsible was mishandling their gun. When speaking about the gunman, he said, "Your carelessness caused a lot of pain." As of this writing, police have not released any additional information about the incident or if they have identified as suspects.
