North Dakota Teens Rally Community to Back the Blue

FARGO, ND - Two Fargo American Legion baseball teams are bringing the community together and helping give back to their local law enforcement agencies.

Fargo Post 400 hosted its second annual "Back the Blue Night" on Friday night, July 18th, in south Fargo, INFORUM reported. Donations were accepted for the North Dakota Peace Officers Association Emergency Relief Fund, which provides financial help to law enforcement officers in times of need, such as during an illness or house fire.

The event's organizer started the annual fundraiser last year to support people like her father, who is a police officer. "I think it means a lot, for that fund, but I think more than anything, just showing the NDPOA and all the law enforcement members that this community supports them, and we have so many people come out and support them," said Ava Nickel, the organizer.

"I think that probably means just as much to them," she added. At the first event, held in 2024, it raised more than $2,000.

Across the country, towns are putting together fundraisers to help support their local law enforcement agencies. In Florida, local nonprofit Flagler Strong hosted a benefit for the Flagler Beach Police Department. The event took place on July 19th, according to Flagler News

The event had a silent auction and on the mic was Surf 97.3 FM's Vern Shank with guest emcee comedy queen Cristy B. There was live music by the Alias Band, Signal 20, and Redfoot. They kept the energy high, entertaining the crowds throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney stepped up to the plate for the dunk tank to help raise funds for the department. Several paid to have a turn at dunking the chief, all in good fun, of course.

The goal was to raise $55,000 for the police department. The live auction, led by Flagler Broadcasting's Kirk Keller drew an estimated $17,000 with the largest bid taking place over a private dinner for 10 cooked by Chef Miguel of the famed Romero's Tuscany by the Sea, including wine service for $7,000.

A solid array of silent auction and raffle items from around the community helped raise the total funds. By late afternoon, the silent auction had raised more than $27,000. The funds are slated to help the Flagler Beach Police Department purchase safety equipment that was not budgeted for this cycle. Donations are still being accepted and can be made at www.weareflaglerstrong.com.
