Florida Man Accused of Nearly Beating Girlfriend to Death With Baseball Bat

HOMESTEAD, FL – A 51-year-old man out of the Miami suburb of Homestead is facing attempted felony murder charges after authorities say the suspect nearly beat his girlfriend to death with a baseball bat earlier in September.

Authorities initially responded to the Homestead residence on September 23rd after the victim claimed her longtime live-in boyfriend, Jamie Michael Lane, had struck her three times with a baseball bat inside the home following a series of arguments earlier in the day.

Lane and the victim had reportedly been romantically involved for seven years, living together for four of them, and were having some sort of nondescript argument that led to the victim ignoring the suspect’s phone calls on the day of the incident. Lane allegedly forced his way into the residence with a baseball bat in hand following the victim’s efforts to dismiss his calls, striking the woman in the forehead, back of the head, and left arm.

According to the victim, after she pleaded to Lane, “Stop before you kill me,” the suspect allegedly dropped down on his knees and begged for forgiveness before fleeing the scene. Witness accounts corroborated the victim’s claims, according to authorities, and a search warrant was executed at the home where authorities recovered a broken wooden bat believed to have been used in the incident.

Officials say the victim suffered a left frontal hematoma and possible skull or facial fractures, as well as showing signs of a blood clot that may require surgery following an evaluation conducted by a neurosurgeon after she was transported to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

On September 24th, Lane self-surrendered to authorities and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center under charges of attempted felony murder, where he is currently being held without bond. A protection order was afforded to the victim should Lane manage to be granted a bond amount in the future.

Lane’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 14th. Felony attempted murder in Florida carries a sentence of up to life in prison if convicted.
