GOP Pushes Bill to Jail Officials Who Block ICE

WASHINGTON, DC – The GOP is reportedly pushing legislation to upend the practices of sanctuary states and cities across the country, with the latest legislative effort looking to prosecute elected officials and local police who refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, the Trump administration has been embroiled in a political/legislative standoff with sanctuary jurisdictions, with numerous incidents stemming from these adopted policies and laws occurring across the country.

The latest effort from Republicans to address the conundrums created by sanctuary jurisdictions comes in the form of newly-drafted legislation which has been aptly dubbed “End Sanctuary Cities Act of 2026,” which would criminalize much of the ongoings in active sanctuary cities and states.

Per the proposed legislation, “It shall be unlawful for any responsible executive official of a State or unit of local government, acting under color of law, to knowingly prohibit, limit, or restrict compliance with any formal request under the immigration laws by the Department of Homeland Security for reasonable advance notice regarding the release of a criminal alien.”

Depending on the criminal charges or convictions of illegal aliens released via sanctuary policies, the legislation, if passed, could result in elected officials and local law enforcement facing up to 25 years in federal prison for failing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

During a Senate Budget Committee Hearing held on March 10th, Senator Lindsey Graham emphasized that sanctuary policies have been actively harming the public since their inception whilst the enablers of said policies have largely been unaffected. According to Sen. Graham’s rationale, this legislation would make it so those very elected officials pushing sanctuary policies will “feel the pain, not just the public.”

“We believe it is endangering public safety,” Sen. Graham also noted during the committee hearing, adding, “10,000 criminals released by sanctuary policies who went on to be arrested for additional crimes. They should’ve been turned over they weren’t.”

Notable incidents connected to sanctuary policies were brought up by Republicans during the hearing, with Former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf commenting on cases like the fatal stabbing of 41-year-old Stephanie Minter who was reportedly murdered by an illegal alien with over 30 prior arrests and whose detainers were routinely ignored by officials in Fairfax, Virginia.

“How many more Americans need to die at the hands of illegal aliens released by sanctuary jurisdictions,” Wolf highlighted during the hearing.
