SOUTH BEND, IN - Authorities are investigating an incident that resulted in two people being injured by gunfire, including a police officer, Saturday night near Notre Dame Stadium during a football game.
A press release from the South Bend Police Department (SBPD) stated that around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, officers were told by the Notre Dame Police Department (NDPD) that a man had been seen with a gun and was reportedly pointing it at people, WTHR reported.
Officers found a person matching the description of the alleged gunman, but that person was found to be unarmed when police made contact with them. Nearly 20 SBPD officers were responding to the call near Eddy Street Commons, which is just south of Notre Dame Stadium, when they heard a single gunshot near the intersection of North Eddy Street and East Angela Boulevard.
Officers found a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Police described her injury as "non-life-threatening" and said she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. An SBPD officer was also injured, but preliminary evidence suggested that the officer's injury may have been caused by a ricochet from the gunfire.
The officer was treated on scene, and his injury was also described as "non-life-threatening." A third person was injured at the scene, but not by gunfire. Police believe that person was injured during a fight that preceded the shooting.
Emergency notifications from Notre Dame said that the alleged suspect ran west from the scene, but police believe the alleged suspect has since left the campus area. "We do have suspect information, we're following every single lead on that and I'm confident we'll find out who and why and then we'll get to ask them why they would do such an idiotic thing," South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski said.
