ATLANTA, GA – A Dekalb County Police officer with just shy of a year’s service with the force was fatally shot earlier in August while responding to an active shooter call near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) building at Emory University.
On August 8th at approximately 4:50 p.m., a 30-year-old man later identified as Patrick Joseph White reportedly opened fire outside of the CDC campus at Emory University. An active shooter alert was sent out at the school, putting the campus on lockdown while police were called to respond.
Among the first to respond to the scene was 33-year-old Dekalb County Officer David Rose, who was apparently shot by the suspect shortly after confronting the gunman. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum told reporters following the incident that additional officers who responded had found Officer Rose critically injured at the scene and had rushed him to an area hospital. Unfortunately, Officer Rose succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Emory University Hospital.
The shooter, White, was reportedly located by police within the second story of “a CVS at a retail and apartment complex” near the CDC campus building, with Chief Schierbaum saying he died by apparent gunfire but is unsure whether the wounds were self-inflicted or sustained by return fire from officers. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed no others were injured during the shooting.
Officer Rose joined the DeKalb County Police Department back in September of 2024, with his passing being one month shy of his first anniversary with the department. He is survived by his parents, siblings, as well as a wife and two children, with another one on the way.
Mayor Dickens shared a statement in light of Officer Rose’s passing, saying, “We grieve alongside his family. My heart goes out to the entire Dekalb county government and police department,” further adding, “Officer Rose’s passing is a stark reminder that every day, law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, and this dedication deserves our respect and gratitude.”
