WASHINGTON, DC - Following a recent CBS News report claiming illegal aliens arrested under the current administration largely did not have any charges or convictions of “violent criminal offenses,” the assistant secretary for Homeland Security pushed back on the claims made, highlighting the omissions CBS News employed under their definition of violent offenses.
Earlier in February, CBS News released a report with a jarring headline which reads, “Less than 14% of those arrested by ICE in Trump's 1st year back in office had violent criminal records, document shows,” with the report attempting to discredit the Trump administration’s claims and accompanying efforts to apprehend what has been repeatedly cited as “the worst of the worst” criminal illegal aliens.
In CBS News’ reporting on the cited data, the outlet only points to offenses like homicide, robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault, and assault as being under the umbrella term of “violent offenses” touted when attempting to undermine the efforts of the current administration.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin took to social media to address the reporting from CBS News, writing, “Drug trafficking, distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, [and] human smuggling are all categorized as ‘non-violent crimes.’ Like we said, ~70% of those illegal aliens arrested under Trump and [Secretary Noem] have pending criminal charges or prior convictions.”
Apparently, CBS News also glossed over criminal illegal aliens who had criminal charges or convictions from their country of origin, framing such individuals as simply people who were apprehended by immigration authorities for civil immigration offenses.
Assistant Secretary McLaughlin also addressed the omission by CBS News, writing, “By [CBS’s] standard, Edward Hernandez, who [ICE] arrested last week in Virginia is a ‘non criminal’ because he hasn’t been convicted in the United States. Never mind that he is an MS-13 member & confessed to murdering 5 people in El Salvador through shooting, torturing, stabbing, and dismemberment (including one victim who was alive.)”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also joined in on the social media fray addressing CBS News’ reporting, writing, “Nearly 70% of criminal aliens detained by ICE have pending charges or prior convictions. So-called ‘non-violent’ offenders include individuals charged with drug trafficking, distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, human smuggling, and more. Labeling these offenses as ‘non-violent’ does not mean they aren’t threats to public safety.”
