HOUSTON, TX - A fatal hit-and-run crash involving a man in a wheelchair from earlier in June is being investigated by the Houston Police Department (HPD), with authorities actively working to identify the at-large suspect allegedly responsible for the collision.
The HPD is actively searching for the owner of a silver Mazda sedan who witnesses told police was involved in the fatal hit-and-run that occurred on the evening of June 5th along the 4400 block of Reed Road in Houston. Authorities say the collision occurred at approximately 9:12 p.m. when the unidentified driver allegedly struck a male in a wheelchair and reportedly fled the scene.
Conflicting reports regarding the suspect vehicle have also described the driver allegedly responsible as operating a “dark blue Ford or Dodge pickup” at the time of the incident, according to a local ABC News affiliate. However, HPD Sergeant Mike Barrow later clarified that a witness account is leading authorities to believe the at-large driver was operating a Mazda, saying, “We do have a witness who then pointed out that vehicle to us, we are currently trying to locate that suspect vehicle and bring them in.”
The decedent has not been publicly identified by officials, but authorities have confirmed they believe they’ve successfully identified the victim and are in communication with the deceased’s family. Numerous reports on the matter described the victim as a “pedestrian” struck along the side of the road as opposed to an intersection.
Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that can help investigators in the matter, highlighting that would-be tipsters can directly contact the HPD Vehicular Criminal Division at 713-247-4072. Those who’d prefer to remain anonymous in their reporting can also submit tips to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
