ICE Highlights Media Hypocrisy After Arresting Salvadoran Murder Suspect Labeled “Non-Criminal”

WOODBRIDGE, VA - A press release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)  earlier in April detailed the apprehension of a criminal illegal alien fugitive wanted for murder in her home country of El Salvador, highlighting how the fugitive would be considered a “non-criminal” by prior mainstream media reporting standards.

As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, this past February, Homeland Security issued a press release regarding a CBS News report that framed the efforts of the current administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration as targeting illegal aliens who largely lack “violent criminal records,” citing the claim from CBS News as highly misleading.

Among the omissions in CBS News’ February narrative were those pertaining to criminal illegal aliens who harbored either charges or convictions of crimes from their country of origin, framing the demographic as individuals apprehended merely for civil immigration offenses.

In an April 23 press release from ICE announcing the apprehension of a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador wanted for aggravated homicide in her country of origin, the agency resurfaced CBS News’ past framing of the administration’s efforts. The alien in question, Idalia Isabel Morales-Mejia, is a “documented associate” of MS-13 who was taken into custody by ICE Washington, DC officers this past March.

“Idalia Isabel Morales-Mejia is not only a known associate of the notorious MS-13 transnational criminal organization, but she apparently attempted to flee justice in her native country by illegally residing in Virginia,” ICE DC Field Office Director Robert Guadian noted in a statement regarding the woman’s apprehension.

“The media would consider her to be a ‘non-criminal’ because she has no known criminal history in the United States - even though she is facing charges for aggravated homicide in El Salvador,” Director Guadian highlighted in reference to CBS News’ past reporting.

Morales-Mejia had been a fugitive from her country of origin for over a decade following her being charged with aggravated homicide and illicit associations in El Salvador back in 2013, with officials saying she entered the United States illegally at an unknown date or location. Agency officials received intel this past February from the Security Alliance for Fugitive Enforcement Task Force in El Salvador, who suspected Morales-Mejia to be residing somewhere in the northern region of Virginia.

On March 13, Morales-Mejia was located in Woodbridge and arrested without incident, with the fugitive now awaiting removal proceedings.
