Kentucky Police and Firefighters Battle It Out in Friendly Softball Fundraiser

GREEN RIVER, WY – A fundraising event meant to benefit Green River High School’s National Honor Society pitted the local police department against the fire department in a nine-inning softball game, with the local police department coming out on top in the jovial clash of the first responders.

The friendly showdown between Green River Police and the local fire department was rife with on-the-nose puns amid the action, with local reports pointing out “the fire department’s antics of throwing both water balloons and donuts at the police department, in addition to spraying the outfield grass with a fire truck in the last inning.”

But despite the local fire department possibly winning in the humorous displays arena, the same couldn’t be said about the game which ended in a 21-19 victory favoring Green River Police.

In the nine-inning game which carried on into the evening of August 8th, the Green River Police Department maintained the lead throughout the entirety of the game, but the maintained lead and ultimate victory did not come easy as the tides could’ve turned in the fire department’s favor during any given play.

Officers Zach Fryer and Kyle Delisser were highlighted as the most valuable players for Green River Police due to their home runs and runs batted in, with the latter of the two officers having been recognized back in 2022 with an Emergency Medical Service Award by the local city council due to his life-saving efforts performed during a suspected overdose call in June of that year.

Officer Kevin Lennon, who pitched for all nine innings, was also the recipient of the Medal of Valor by the city council back in 2021 due to his and other officers’ response to an armed suspect that led to a shootout where no officer or civilian injuries occurred.

Proceeds collected via ticket sales and concession stands worked by the high school’s National Honor Society students will go toward funding the upcoming school year.

In a social media post by the Green River Police Department following the game, the department stated, “The rivalry was real, the competition was tough, and the jokes were flying just as fast as the pitches. In the end, GRPD walked away with the Win - but hats off to GRFD for keeping it close and putting on a great game.”
