LONG BEACH, CA - Another in a continuing trend of out-of-control teenagers and young people wreaking havoc on America’s beaches occurred last week when a mob of unhinged clowns took their act to Horny Corner beach in the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, The New York Post reported.
On Thursday, a mob of teenagers gathered around sunset on the first night of summer break for area high schools, including Woodrow Wilson High, which boasts an enrollment of over 3,300 students.
dir="ltr">Video of the scene showed scores of teenagers in the streets and on the beach at Horny Corner and another nearby beach, Rosie’s Dog Beach.
At one point, several females clad in bikinis started brawling, which led to more widespread chaos and which prompted a number of local residents to notify the police, who arrived within five minutes of the first call.
On arrival, officers began to disperse a group of over 500 teenagers gathered at Horny Corner beach, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Just as things appeared to be being brought under control, another fight broke out a couple of blocks away, where officers detained several other teenagers.
Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish told The Post that diverting officers to deal with unruly teen mobs distracts police from responding to other, potentially more serious crimes.
‘Large-scale disturbances like this deplete our resources and divert our officers from addressing other safety concerns in Long Beach, including emergency responses,” the chief said.
At around 9:45 p.m., some juveniles were still in the area despite a curfew, and refused to leave on commands to do so. Five were cited for violating the city’s curfew and driven home to their families.
Hebeish said that the Long Beach PD will establish “an enhanced presence” at area beaches, at least through the weekend.
“Any form of violent behavior or law violations will not be tolerated,” he said.
The Long Beach incident is just the latest in a series of so-called “teen takeovers” at beaches nationwide, with others occurring at Narragansett Town Beach in Rhode Island last month, where three teens were stabbed, Clearwater Beach in Florida where a teen was shot, and another at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, where over fifty people were arrested on various charges.
While the term “teen takeover” seems to make these events appear innocent, they are in fact more like riots where out-of-control teenagers and young people tend to make life miserable from regular beach-goers, including families who are trying to beat the hot weather.
