FAIRFIELD, ME - A Waterville, Maine man is under arrest after he was found with a four-year-old boy who had been reported missing, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Fairfield police officers were dispatched to a town home at around 2:00 a.m. Saturday, however, the child wasn’t there, department spokesperson Casey Dugas said. Police developed additional information that led investigators to a Waterville home, where the child was found with the suspect, Brandon Phair, 37, Dugas said.
The child was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
Police said Phair is known by one of the residents of the Fairfield home, however, is not related to the child. Police have not identified a motive for why Phair took the child.
Phair was charged with kidnapping and criminal restraint and booked into the Somerset County Jail, where he is being held on a $500,000 cash bond. Dugas said additional charges are expected.
NBC-10 in Boston reported that details of the kidnapping have not been released or what led police to the Waterville home. Phair’s court date is unknown, and news media didn’t have information on whether he’s retained an attorney.
Fairfield police were assisted in the investigation by the Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service, the Waterville Police Department, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfield-Benton Emergency Services, and Somerset County Communications.
