Incoming New York Mayor Wants Residents To Resist ICE Operations

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani issued a video statement earlier in December informing New Yorkers on how to “stand up to ICE” following immigration enforcement operations recently carried out in the Manhattan borough.

On December 7th, mayor-elect Mamdani released a video on social media where he delved into the recent immigration enforcement operations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within New York City, telling his constituents that his forthcoming administration will “protect the rights” of the city’s millions of “immigrants.”

“Last weekend, ICE attempted to raid Canal Street and detain our immigrant neighbors. As mayor, I'll protect the rights of every single New Yorker,” Mamdani stated, adding, “and that includes the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city their home. But we can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights.”

The mayor-elect went on to inform viewers on methods they can adopt to essentially obstruct federal law enforcement from carrying out their duties, saying, “If you encounter ICE, these are the things that every New Yorker should know. First, ICE cannot enter into private spaces like your home, school, or private area of your workplace without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.”

Mamdani delved further into the delineations between judicial warrants and ICE administrative warrants, instructing viewers to “keep your door closed” unless federal authorities can produce evidence of a judicial warrant.

While Mamdani did make time to emphasize that anti-ICE activists shouldn’t “impede” federal authorities from carrying out their investigations, as well as to not “resist arrest or run” during an attempted apprehension, he seemingly gave a wink and a nod to these very sorts of bad actors by claiming he’ll protect New Yorkers “right to protest,” which said protests have a propensity to turn violent against law enforcement.

“New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest, and when I'm mayor, we will protect that right,” Mamdani stated in the conclusion of his video, adding, “New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
